ELEPHANT SEALS:

They gather in dozens of groups alongside the Atlantic coast of Peninsula Valdes between August and January. Although, you can see some during June, July, February and March.

The strategic points to admire them from are:

Pta Delgada: 100 km of paved road, 74 km of gravel road. You can rent a car for a day (400 km plus fuel) or go on a guided tour.

Pta Cantor: 100 km of paved road, 79km of gravel road. A cliff-edged walk ending at the incredible tongue-shaped Caleta Valdes

Pta Norte: 100 km of paved road. 79 gravel road, the only place where you can find elephant seals and sea lions sharing the same beach, between September and March

Sea Lions: Pta. Loma: A beautiful beach where you can watch hundred of sea lions playing, swimming and sunbathing. You can also observe the dominant males and their voluptuous fights for females and territory. (15 km to the south of Pto. Madryn). You can rent a bike for the day or take a taxi (will wait for you for half an hour) or a guided tour. Others stops along that way are the cliffs and “restingas” (natural pool) of Punta Este, Playa Parana, Playa Pozo and Cerro Avanzado.

Penguins: They start arriving by mid-September but the peak season is in December, when they are close to a million.

They are a monogamist species that get together to Pta. Tombo (140 km of paved road and 40 km of gravel road). You can go on a tour or rent a car. There is only a small souvenir shop and a fast food restaurant besides guanacos and thousands and thousands of penguins swimming, eating, fighting, and mating. It is the best place to admire the species,  the amazing quantity gives us the possibility of watching all the animal´s attitudes and learn about their different behaviours.

Never touch or feed the penguins.

They can also be seen at Peninsula Valdes (Caleta Valdes) with a different attitude (not so friendly) as it is a new colony, and in shorter numbers.

Orcas: Probably the most difficult figure- head in Patagonia. It is possible to see them sometimes between February and April in Pta. Norte, and in October and November in Caleta Valdes.

Guanacos: They are seen in groups  alongside the route. When you identify them tell the rest. They scare easy but you can watch them for a distance as they feed, run and jump.

Dolphins: Very friendly animals. Group between 10 and 40 can be seen during the summer season.

75% chance of seeing them. No refund if after sailing for four hours you were unable to see them. Second round the price will need to be agreed.

Armadillos. In Pta Norte or Caleta Valdes, you´ll see caves next to the park rangers´s to station, but they are really all over the peninsula.

Patagonian Ostrich or Choique: The Tehuelches (local aborigines) eat their eggs and sometimes their meat. Unlike the guanacos which will run if you approach them, choiques will try to loose themselves in the vegetation.

Fox: They are frequently seen at Pta. Tombo or Pta. Piramide near the colonies of elephant seals and sea lions. Some are almost friendly. They´ll try to get close to tourists to receive food
